Barn Manager Job Description

Position Overview

The barn manager ensures the health, well-being, and condition of the horses at our facility, under the supervision of the Program or Executive Director and in collaboration with the Facilities Manager and Head Instructor.

Primary Duties

  1. Daily maintenance of the horses at the facility, including stall cleaning, feeding, turnout, and related duties.
  2. Supervision and scheduling of paid and volunteer part-time barn staff.
  3. Coordination of horse use/exercise schedule, including usage in the lesson program.
  4. Working closely with the veterinarian, organizing medical supplies, and overseeing the administration of daily medications and supplements.
  5. Regularly updating horse health records (Coggins, shoeing, dental, etc.).
  6. Screening and in-take for new program horses.
  7. Providing first aid/wound/other supportive care as needed.
  8. Ordering feed, hay, shavings, etc., and monitoring feed changes as needed.
  9. Operating various barn equipment such as tractor, backhoe, etc., as needed.
  10. Being on-call for horse and barn emergencies.
  11. Other duties as assigned by the Program Director or Executive Director.

Qualifications

  1. Minimum 5 years horse/stable management experience.
  2. Comfortable in working out of doors in all weather conditions.
  3. Valid PA Driver’s License and experience in hauling a horse trailer.
  4. Proficiency in at least 1 riding discipline; familiarity with other disciplines desired.
  5. Familiarity with the demands placed on a therapeutic riding horse.
  6. Experience in horse training, including groundwork.
  7. Strong staff management and teamwork skills.
  8. Solid written and verbal communications skills.
  9. Commitment to safety at all times.
  10. Ability to work with diverse groups
  11. Must be U.S. citizen or possess a valid resident/work permit, and maintain a valid Pennsylvania State driver’s license. Must pass a Pennsylvania Common Wealth Criminal History Report and background check. Must complete child abuse mandatory reporting training and obtain current child abuse clearances through DPW. Part Time Barn Staff Position Available:

Daily maintenance of the horses at the facility, including stall cleaning, feeding, turnout, and related duties.

Comfortable in working out of doors in all weather conditions.

Must be U.S. citizen or possess a valid resident/work permit, and maintain a valid Pennsylvania State driver’s license. Must pass a Pennsylvania Common Wealth Criminal History Report and background check. Must complete child abuse mandatory reporting training and obtain current child abuse clearances through DPW. Must pass workplace drug screening.

Competitive hourly salary will be dependent upon skills and experience. Hours can vary, could range 7am-10am; 5pm-8pm.
